Mike & Ike Mirror

Mirrors are a favorite thing of mine.  I don't know why, but painting and decorating them is really fun to me.  Maybe it is the design and the reflection of it, I don't know, but if I see a cool mirror, I have to have it.  This one jumped out at me because of it's geometric shape and it is possible to hang it two different ways.  The cutout design is unique and I have never seen one like this before.

On to the design...I started by painting this cream, but didn't like it, so I changed it to green.  Originally all of the square shapes were also cream, but it didn't look right, so I started by adding black, then the red and the pink and finally the lavender.  Now, to me it also started to remind me of Mike & Ike candies.  The background with the green is reminiscent of the box and the squares like the colors of the candy inside and also some of the rectangles are similar in shape to them, so I named it the Mike & Ike mirror.  It is a smaller mirror measuring at about  14 inches across and about 6 inches tall or 6 x 14 if you flip it the other way.  Here is a question if anyone is out there.  What was the name of the candy like Mike & Ike, but with licorice?

11/13/2010 Side note:  I was at the store and found that there are Mike & Ikes, Good & Plenty and Good & Fruity.  I answered my own question!

Heartthrob Cafe Memories

The best job ever and the coolest friends that I ever had were when I worked at a restaurant called the Heartthrob Cafe.  It was in downtown St Paul, Minnesota and was so fun!  Today we had a get together to catch up and reminisce.  This is one of the many good things about facebook, finding people that you wished you never lost contact with.  So, today my post is the buttons that I made for this event.  We had 'flair' that was a lot more fun and cool than a restaurant chain that I will not name here.  We danced and sang birthday songs.  The girls wore poodle skirts and we did all of this while wearing in line skates.  We were a crazy family and honestly this was one of the best times in my life.  Ahhh...memories. In the time spent there somehow the button machine came into my possession.  In honor of our gathering, of course I had to make pins.  Here are also two murals that I painted at the restaurant.  Let me...

Pansy Pig

This is the second time that I have found a pig cutting board to use as a canvas for my painting.  This one is slightly larger than the previous one and also has a cute curly tail.       It cost 1.49 at the Goodwill, one of their weekly specials.  Every Tuesday they feature a different color of tag and anything with that color is 1.49.  I love Tuesdays!   Instead of another block design, I decided to paint pansies only in colors that they don't naturally grow.  I have mentioned my preference for things in black and white, but, red is a color that is next on my list of favorites.  The flowers really jump out at you in this project.  My next step is where to put her.  Ah, decisions.  Happy Creating!

Cocktail Coasters Part One

What a beautiful day!  Read the Sunday paper, went for a walk, relaxed and painted.  I actually painted outside to fully take advantage of the weather.  Since tropical things are on my mind because of yesterday, the project for this post is featuring refreshing summer beverages.  This set of coasters is from a great thrift store and cost 1.91, what a bargain.  The original style is definitely from the seventies.  At first the plan was to make each coaster a different color, but that just didn't work.  A neutral color worked much better with the colorful cocktails.  With the distraction of the weather only three and the holder were finished today.  The others should be done for tomorrow. Hmm...why does a margarita sound good right now?
